HIBISCUS BENEFITS: The Flower Plant That Can Cure Your Hair and Skin Woes

$

Hibiscus flowers are not only beautiful to look at, but also offer great benefits for the skin and hair. Who would have thought that an unassuming backyard plant like Hibiscus can be the answer to many of our beauty problems?

A staple in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbology, Hibiscus is traditionally consumed as tea to treat various digestive, respiratory, and urinary ailments. But due to its high vitamin and mineral content, its organic compounds have also become a common ingredient in many beauty products.

Natural Source of Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Amino Acids

Two of those compounds are Alpha-Hydroxy Acid and Amino Acid. You’ll know when a product contains AHA when you see glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, or citric acid on the label. These compounds help reduce cell adhesion in the outermost layer of skin and hair without damaging and stripping them of their natural moisture—which can sometimes occur with synthetic AHAs.

Amino Acids, on the other hand, are necessary for producing keratin, which makes up the key structure of our hair and skin. In other words, for the body to produce healthy hair and skin cells, it must have sufficient access to these amino acids.

HOW HIBISCUS BENEFITS THE HAIR

Prevents Hair Breakage

Split ends? Brittle hair? It’s not a pretty sight, but it can be repaired. Bombarding our hair with different chemicals can rob it of its natural oil, causing it to lose moisture and snap. The AHAs in Hibiscus sloughs off all dirt and chemicals causing the damage and rehydrates the hair’s keratin fibers. It also contains plenty of amino acids which add much-needed strength and elasticity to the hair. Using protein sprays containing hibiscus extract, like OWAY’s Hrestore, is a perfect pre-treatment step before subjecting the hair to heat, styling, or coloring.

Delays Premature Greying

Finding grey hair can be a nightmare, especially if you’re too young to have one. Premature greying can be caused by many variables but it’s mainly due to slow production of melanin, the pigment that gives the hair its natural color, in the hair follicles. The lack of melanin is often attributed to genes, stress, vitamin-deficiency, and extrinsic factors like pollution and ammonia.

Because Hibiscus is chock full of antioxidants and vitamins essential for melanin production, it helps prevent premature greying by nourishing the hair shafts before they even start to lose pigment.1 OWAY Hcolor contains biodynamic Hibiscus and zero ammonia (an industrial bleaching agent that strips the hair of its natural color) so it does not only provide the hair the nutrients it needs for healthier strands, but it also protects it from further fading.

Makes Hair More Manageable

Mucilage – the thick, gluey substance produced by Hibiscus for storing water – is intensely hydrating. It lubricates each strand, allowing for easier detangling while adding softness and shine to the hair shaft. It’s like a leave-in conditioner, without the harsh chemicals.

Hibiscus-Beauty-Benefits

Cleanses Strands and Scalp

When our scalp produces excess sebum, it can lead to many problems such as dandruff, scalp acne, itchiness, and frizzy hair. When this happens, it means that the pH level of the scalp is too high, and needs to be balanced — STAT.

The organic compounds obtained from Hibiscus contain significant amounts of citric acid and antioxidants that it’s acidic enough to be used as a pH-balancing agent.2 These compounds regulate the scalp’s oil production and strip the hair of all pollutants while maintaining their natural protection barriers.

Before doing any service, make sure to cleanse the hair first. Otherwise, you’ll be exposing the hair to more damage. We recommend using OWAY Htech Shampoo to prepare the hair fibers for any technical service.

HOW HIBISCUS BENEFITS THE SKIN

Halts Aging

Many skincare products claim that they have discovered the Fountain of Youth. When in reality, it’s really not that hard to find. In fact, hundreds of different species of it grow in warm, tropical regions around the world.

The AHA and anti-oxidant contents of Hibiscus act as pore-reducing agents and exfoliants that scrub off dead skin cells. In addition, the mucilage is an effective moisturizer. Combine all these elements together, and you have an anti-aging ingredient that with constant use, gives skin a younger, suppler appearance.

Improves Skin Tone and Texture

The citric acid in Hibiscus accelerates cell turnover, which is beneficial to those who suffer from hyperpigmentation. There are several causes of hyperpigmentation, but the most common are overexposure to the sun and pollution. Citric acid reverses the damage caused by free radicals and UV rays through exfoliation, resulting in a more even skin tone and smoother texture.

To speed up the process, Hibiscus can be added to products containing natural scrubs, such as Luma Lisse Lustrous Micro Polish.

Unblocks and Cleans Pores

Every day, our skin battles with sweat, dirt, and pollution. And if you have especially oily skin, they could clog your pores and lead to blackheads – or worse, pimples. Hibiscus has natural surfactants that help cleanse the skin in a mild, soothing way. They act as magnets for excess oil, dirt, and bacteria, and gently wash them away without drying out the skin—a common issue with skincare products using chemical surfactants.3

Hibiscus is only one of the many natural ingredients that offer countless benefits to our hair and skin, so why should we ever want to use harsh chemicals for our beauty needs? Some chemically-based products may be more accessible and promise quick results, but the effects often don’t last long and can even cause more harm than good. With natural ingredients, you get even better efficacy, minus the harsh drawbacks.

OWAY Stylist Spotlight: Maren McKenna

Oway-Stylist

This month, our OWAY Stylist Spotlight is on Maren McKenna of Verde Salon in Chandler, AZ. Maren keeps on surprising us with her killer balayage skills on social media and rightfully deserves a spot in our list of holistic hairstylists to follow. Below she shares with us her go-to OWAY products and why she chose the organic way of life.

Don’t forget to check out some of her amazing work at the bottom!

Who inspires you in your life and why?

My father is my biggest inspiration in life. He’s always striving to improve not only as a person, but at life as well! I can honestly say I’ve never seen anyone make so many self-improvements. As I’ve watched my parents journey through life, they remind me most that as much as life knocks you down, you can make it through anything as long as you keep persevering. He’s the best.

What are some ways you market yourself?

When it comes to marketing, I have been very fortunate to work for a salon that speaks for itself. Verde Salon is an all-organic salon, that once people find out, they can’t stay away. Working with organic color and products is a huge gift. I believe we are at the forefront of the hair industry and hopefully, all hair products will head in this direction. I’ve also been spending a significant time building my Instagram page to showcase my work. This is how I’ve found some of my favorite artists, and learn lots of tips and tricks from them!

Oway-Color-Protection

What suggestions do you give your clients before leaving your chair on home care etc.?

I’ve found that when I use products I’m passionate about such as OWAY, my clients see that and trust my recommendations implicitly. I personally use OWAY at home and share that with my clients as well (My hair is actually long again! Hooray!). I always recommend shampoo and conditioner to insure their color lasts and stays vibrant and shiny, particularly the Color Protection line. Styling products sell themselves once I use them in their hair.

What OWAY product is your favorite and who do you primarily use it for?

My favorite OWAY product? There are too many! Glossy Nectar first and foremost. I use it on pretty much every client. I love that it cuts down on drying time pre-blow dry and I love finishing with it to tame fly aways and add some glorious shine! Flux Potion is a close second. I love the lightweight hold and volume it creates. It makes my clients hair feel thicker without that “too much product” feeling. The third is probably the Bio-Rich Water because what’s not to love! I use it as a cutting lotion on every client because I love the fragrance and the added benefits I get from all those essential oils. I tell my clients it’s like vitamins for their hair.

Do you have a go-to formula?

My favorite OWAY formula…this is a tough one as I’ve become so fond of the whole line! I must say I really like breaking the base with the 90 series. Using 90.2/90.11 double 40 vol for no more than five minutes (to avoid exposing too much warmth) is a go-to for me. The mixed tones are wonderful too! I like mixing them together especially for rich lowlights, and I love the 6.62. I try to use it whenever I can.

If you were to travel anywhere in the world, where would that be and why?

oway-glossy-nectar

If I could travel anywhere, it would probably be back to Ireland. I was fortunate enough to go on a family vacation back in 2007 to learn about my family’s heritage. We learned that the McKennas still reside in Northern Ireland! I fell in love with the miles of rolling green hills and the friendly people. I would love to go back and experience more of it one day. I wouldn’t say no to getting married there either.

Words of wisdom on converting to a Holistic brand and way of life?

Living a more natural way of life is still something I’m striving to get better at day by day. I’m learning to be more aware of what I eat and about the products I use on my body. I must say being more conscious of these things makes me feel better than I ever have. Working with organic hair care is a true gift and is the only way I plan to do hair as I continue with my career. I’m very grateful that I found it early on as a stylist. The great thing about OWAY is that it’s not only a natural, more gentle color line, but it supersedes traditional color lines in my opinion. I always get questions about it, like does it last as long, does it work as well, etc. — the answer is most definitely YES!

ROSEMARY BENEFITS: How This Powerful Plant Can Transform How You Look & Feel

Rosemary-Benefits

Although famous for its culinary uses, Rosemary offers numerous benefits that extend far beyond cookbooks. This woody evergreen contains nutrients and organic compounds that improve not only our internal health but also external beauty. This is why many cosmetic companies are incorporating extracts from this herb in their products, particularly hair care.

How Hair Benefits From Rosemary

Boosts Hair Growth

oway-essential-oilsWe all want lush, voluminous hair so seeing clumps of hair fall out can be alarming. While hair loss is a result of multiple factors, it can be avoided by treating the scalp with a stimulating oil rich in Iron and Magnesium, such as Rosemary Oil. Iron and Magnesium are essential for producing hemoglobin, the protein molecule in our blood that carries oxygen and essential nutrients to all tissues of the body – including the hair follicles. Without ample blood and nutrition, the hair follicles are unable to support hair growth, causing the hair to wither and fall out.

When applied, Rosemary Oil penetrates the scalp and stimulates the microcapillaries, enhancing blood flow to the hair follicles.1 This enables the hair to complete its growth cycle. We recommend integrating essential oils with rosemary, such as Oway Strengthening Essential Oil Blend, in your hair treatment routine to prevent hair loss and boost growth.

Conditions and Calms Frizz

Don’t you just hate it when you walk out the door with sleek, beautiful hair and minutes later it turns into one huge, frizzy mess? Each hair strand is covered with cuticle scales that overlap like roof shingles. When hair is dehydrated, these scales rise, allowing more moisture to escape. Unlike chemically based moisturizers that stay only on the surface of the hair, oils like Rosemary Oil penetrate and seals the hair shaft to retain moisture. Apart from that, Rosemary Oil is almost weightless in texture, so it doesn’t weigh the hair down.

Treats Dandruff

Dandruff can be caused by dry or oily scalp. When the scalp is dry, it becomes flaky and itchy due to loss of moisture. This means that you may be suffering from Vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A aids in the production of sebum, replenishing it with enough moisture to keep the pH of the scalp balanced. Using shampoos and conditioners with Rosemary, like Oway Purifying Hair Bath for Dry Scalp, can alleviate the flakiness and itch through its vitamin and antibacterial properties.

Strengthens Hair

Blow-drying, curling, or flattening—even shampooing—daily can put the hair under so much stress, causing it to lose its natural oils and become brittle. This is why it’s important that we replenish the hair back to its healthy state with proteins and vitamins.

Rosemary is an excellent source of Vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant when used as a component in hair care products. It protects the hair from free radicals—including harsh chemicals–causing the damage. Vitamin C is also a building block for collagen2, a structural protein that keeps the hair strong and healthy. To reverse the damage, we recommend treating hair with a hair mask infused with Rosemary, like Smooth Rituals Healing Hair Mask.

How Rosemary Improves Your Mood & Performance

oway-flowerfallAside from its nutrient content, Rosemary is also hailed for its mental and cognitive benefits. A common ingredient in aromatherapy essential oil blends, this woody herb contains phytochemicals that help improve memory and mood.3

Thus, incorporating Rosemary in hair treatments will not only keep hair and scalp problems at bay but also create a relaxing atmosphere, especially when combined with other essential oils like lavender. Oway Flowerfall is made from a fusion of mood-boosting ingredients such as biodynamic lavender, rosemary, and rose, which help create a soothing spa experience.

The list of health benefits Rosemary provides is not even remotely close to this list. But isn’t it amazing that everything we need to improve our hair’s health is just sitting on our kitchen counters? If you don’t have Rosemary at home, you can always rely on organic beauty products to keep your locks in tip-top shape.

5 Hair Style Trends to Try This 2017

$

This year’s New York and Paris Fashion Week gave us a sneak peek of the hair trends heading our way and they’re not what you expect. This 2017, it’s all about embracing your natural hair and bringing old trends back, with a modern twist of course. Here are the 5 top hair styles you’ll be seeing a lot in the coming months.

Baby Bangs

2017-Hair-Trend-Baby-Bangs
Images from Pinterest

The 1920s gave birth to the baby bangs, but Bettie Page and Audrey Hepburn rocked the fringe in the 50s so well – making it one of the most iconic hairstyles of all time. This year, it’s making a comeback but this time, it’s much sharper, shorter, and textured.

Blunt Texture

Blunt-Haircut-Trend-2017

Layered locks are out – sharp cuts are in. 2017 is all about edgy styles and nothing can be edgier than straight, blunt haircuts. However, this trend is best for people with finer, thinner strands because the cut will help add weight and structure to the hair. This is also a great option for people with fried hair from over-styling as it chops off the damaged ends.

TIP: To keep the hair in place, we recommend using O&M Project Sukuroi Gold Smoothing Hair Balm for a sleek, frizz-free look.

Modern Shag

Modern-Shag-Hair-Trend-2017
Images from Instagram @salsalhair

No other haircut captures the seventies youth culture more than the shag. Back then, it was heavily layered at the top with hair kept away from the face. This year’s updated version of the shag is longer and wispier with more layers from crown to ends, giving the wearer a perfectly disheveled hair.

Lob

Lob-Haircut-Trend-2017

Yep, the lob (or long bob) trend is not going anywhere. The mid-length style made a splash last year and it has become a favorite among many celebrities thanks to its low-maintenance yet trendy appeal.

With the lob, it’s easy to switch up your look. It’s perfect for every face shape and hair texture as well, so styling is always a breeze – whether you want it sleek and straight or wavy and tousled.

Au Naturel Curls

Natural-Curls-Hair-Trend-2017

Let your natural curls out because 2017 is their year! In fact, many people with silky straight hair are getting perms because let’s admit it: curls are incredibly sexy.

The past month, almost every show from New York and Paris Fashion Week showcased naturally curly models sashaying the runways of Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch, YSL, Balmain, and Christian Dior, to name a few. A testament that even big-name brands recognize the power of ringlets and afros.

When styling, use O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum or Oway Glossy Nectar to add a gorgeous shine to those beautiful curls.

KUKUI BUTTER BENEFITS: The Ancient Hawaiian Secret to Healthy Hair & Scalp

$
0
0

There’s a reason kukui (Aleurites moluccana) is Hawaii’s official state tree. For hundreds of years, the locals relied on every part of the tree for food, building canoes, and treating various ailments like stomach and oral health problems. Early settlers would roast the kukui nuts to extract oil, which they used to light candles and torches. Hence, it became popularly known as candlenut tree.

But it was the Hawaiian women who saw the beauty benefits of kukui oil. Because of its light scent and color, not to mention its rich vitamin content, they used the oil to treat various skin and hair problems. Today, kukui is regarded as one of the best sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamins that the oil and butter derived from it have already become staple ingredients in many skin and hair care products.

Benefits of Kukui Butter to the Hair

Promotes Hair Growth

On average, all of us grow hair at about ¼ inch every month. But if yours is growing less than that (or not at all), it may be due to some scalp issues. Greasy and chemically laden products can clog the pores in our scalp, causing build up. This stunts hair growth as it keeps the scalp from breathing, and blood and nutrients from reaching the follicles.

Like jojoba oil, kukui butter is a lightweight emollient. Unlike its synthetic and occlusive counterparts, kukui penetrates the scalp and hair, allowing the skin to breathe and absorb all the necessary nutrients to continue its growth cycle. Furthermore, kukui is high in Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linoleic acid) essential for hair growth.

Prevents Hair Loss

Apart from Omega-3 fatty acids, kukui butter is also rich in vitamin C and E. Vitamin C is a known antioxidant that blocks harmful chemicals and free radicals that weaken the hair and cause it to fall out.  On the other hand, Vitamin E helps improve circulation in the scalp by bringing oxygen to the hair follicles. These essential vitamins work together to ensure the hair has all the nutrients it needs to grow healthy and strong.

Repairs Damaged Hair

Dealing with damaged hair can be a bit frustrating especially if you love styling and coloring your hair. Fortunately, you don’t need to chop it all off or completely swear off coloring to restore it back to health. All it needs is a little TLC, and maybe some kukui butter to bring it back to life.

As mentioned before, kukui contains antioxidants that repair the hair shaft and strip the hair of free radicals causing the damage – without dehydrating it. Instead, it fills cracks in the hair structure and seals it to prevent moisture from escaping.

When coloring or bleaching hair, it is best to use products that contain emollients like kukui butter. That way you won’t damage the integrity of the hair. Oway Hbleach is the first-ever lightener derived from kukui butter and pure essential oils, so there’s little to no damage when lifting hair.

Kukui-Butter-Hair-Benefits

Hydrates Strands

Dull, parched hair and shiny, new hairstyles don’t exactly go well together. When styling, the hair needs to be hydrated and strong enough to withstand any heat or color. The good news is, there’s kukui butter for that.

Kukui also has rich Vitamin A content which helps soothe and hydrate the hair. Its emollient properties lock in moisture by laying down a triglyceride blanket of lipids containing unsaturated fatty acids that protect the hair from further drying.1

Reduces Scalp Psoriasis

oway-hbleachFor centuries, oil derived from kukui has been used as topical treatment for various skin issues in Hawaii. It is believed to help reduce inflammation, burning, and itching – which is not surprising considering the high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids found in kukui. In 2011, a group of researchers found that Omega-3 fatty acids, when used as supplementary treatment, significantly reduces psoriasis and even scalp lesions.2

Isn’t it wonderful how nature provides us all the answers to our health and beauty concerns? Kukui butter may not be as popular as other oils, but we certainly can’t deny the amazing benefits it brings our body.

Why is My Hair Color Fading: 10 Things to Consider

$
0
0

how-to-keep-hair-color-from-fading

When maintaining freshly colored hair, there are a few things to consider to ensure your money and color don’t go down the drain, literally. First, we must take a holistic approach to hair health and color. What goes on before and during your color service is just as important as what comes after.

Read on to find out how to prevent hair color from fading.

1) Determine Hair’s Porosity Level

Prior to coloring, it’s important to determine the hair’s health. You may be wondering how to determine what the hair needs. The easiest way to diagnose hair health is to conduct The Wet Stretch Test. This simple test will reveal if the hair is lacking protein, moisture or both. Both protein (keratin) and moisture are essential components of healthy hair –  if they’re missing your hair color could fade quickly.

If hair is in poor condition (we’re looking at you split ends), a protein or moisturizing treatment may be needed before you color. This will help “fill in” empty spaces in the hair and give the color molecules a better anchor point, resulting longer lasting color results.

2) Insufficient Color Processing Time

A common reason behind fast-fading hair color is insufficient processing time, meaning the hair color did not stay on long enough. This especially holds true if you or your client have grey hair.

Grey hair cuticles are tightly packed down, and take longer to open and absorb artificial hair color molecules.

3) Hard Water Effects on Hair Color

It’s estimated that nearly 65% of Americans have hard water in their homes. The elements present in hard water (specifically, calcium and magnesium) are extremely problematic when trying to ensure lasting hair color results. They tend to build up on the hair over time and can prevent color molecules from penetrating the cuticle. If you live in an area with hard water, we recommend removing minerals from the hair with Malibu-C Crystal Gels.

Learn how hard water effects hair color.

4) Inadequate Emulsification

Emulsifying the hair at the shampoo bowl is one of the most essential components of a successful and long lasting color service. For a proper emulsification process, add a small amount of water to the hair and begin to massage the hair and color together, creating a nice lather.

By properly emulsifying the hair, you’re breaking up the oil-based color and ensuring the hair has absorbed as much color as possible before closing the cuticle.

ORGANIC TIP: You should be emulsifying at the bowl for approximately 4-5 minutes.

5) Rinsing with Hot Water

When the time comes to rinse out the hair color, be sure that you’re rinsing with lukewarm water. Too hot of water can cause the cuticle to open further, allowing for some of the color to rinse out during your shampoo process.

ORGANIC TIP: When clients wash their hair at home, they should also only use lukewarm water. Scolding hot water will only cause their hair color to fade prematurely.

6) Shampooing Hair Too Soon After Coloring

Reminding your clients that waiting at least 24 hours to wash their hair after their color service will help prolong their fresh, new color. However, what may be more important than waiting to shampoo, is using the correct aftercare products.

7) Using Products That Strip Hair Color

The number one ingredient to avoid in your aftercare products is SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfates). However, using color care shampoo and conditioners that are also pH balanced and free of plastics will prove to enhance and extend the life of hair color.

Using products with too high of a pH can cause the cuticle to re-open. An open cuticle will ultimately cause your hair color to fade fast and off tone. In addition, styling products that are loaded with plastics and petrochemicals can build up on the hair, causing hair to appear dull and lifeless.

8) Improper UV Protection

Using products without proper UV protection is an open invite for the harsh, damaging UV rays of the sun to fade hair color. If clients do not have proper UV protection in the hair, advise them to wear a hat when they are outside to limit exposure.

ORGANIC TIP: Try sending your clients home with shampoo, conditioner, or leave-in product formulated with natural UV protectants.

9) Using Hot Styling Tools Without Heat Protection

Another hair color culprit are hot tools! If your client is adamant user of flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers, be sure they are using thermal protection hair products. This will protect the delicate hair against extreme heat, and allow color to stay in the hair longer.

10) Color Hair Too Infrequently

Although there are semi-permanent and permanent hair color options, no color will look the same as the first day it was done. By addressing the previously stated causes of hair color fading, we also suggest making sure you are coloring your hair regularly enough to achieve your desired results.

Be Spring and Summer-Ready with These Cruelty-Free Beauty Essentials

Spring has finally arrived, and that only means it’s time to head out and enjoy the warm weather. But as the days grow longer and the temperature rises, we need to protect ourselves from the harsh effects of UV exposure and other external aggressors. We rounded up a list of must-have beauty essentials to help you enjoy a guilt-free spring and summer.

PROTECT

Oway Sunway Sun Protective Elixir

Oway-Sunway-KitNew hair color? Make it last by spraying Oway Sunway Sun Protective Elixir on your hair before going out. This light spray contains UV filters that form an invisible shield against extreme heat, saltwater, chlorine, and sand – the biggest culprits of dry, damaged hair.

Why It’s Good for You: It contains organic Baobab, fair-trade Passionfruit, and Avocado oils, which are known for their antioxidant and nourishing properties. They protect the hair against harmful elements, penetrate deep into the hair shaft, and form a protective layer to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture.

TREAT

Oway Sunway After-Sun Body Balm

Long hours of sun exposure can lead to various skin issues, like sunburn and fine lines. Applying a protective sunscreen or moisturizer before AND after heading out can go a long way in protecting the skin and reversing any damage. Oway Sunway After-Sun Body Balm relieves and repairs the skin’s structure to a healthier, wrinkle-free state.

Why It’s Good for You: Oway After-Sun Body Balm’s key ingredients are notable for their skin-regenerating properties. Organic Avocado Oil and biodynamic Green Anise are packed with antioxidants that form a barrier against free radicals targeting cellular DNAs, while grapestone and olive oil prevent signs of aging from appearing.

Moroccan Organics – Macadamia Oil Treatment

Extreme temperatures can cause the hair to become frizzy, and chemically processed hair is more prone to it. When it’s not addressed right away, it can lead to breakage and split ends. We recommend Moroccan Organics’ Macadamia Oil Treatment, which is specifically made for dry and chemically processed hair.

Why It’s Good for You: Macadamia oil is a popular ingredient in skin care and cosmetics due to its reconstructive and hydrating properties. It is rich in Squalene, an antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress on the scalp by preventing moisture from escaping.

MASK

O&M Seven-Day Miracle Moisture Masque

So you’re packing for a week-long island getaway, and you think nothing can go wrong. You might be thinking, saltwater can’t be that bad.

Cruelty-free-Beauty-Essentials

While salt indeed has detoxifying properties, overexposure leaches out not just hair color, but also moisture from the hair causing it to lose more water and become brittle – and when we add prolonged sun exposure, it results in heavily damaged hair. To restore the health of your hair, you need an intense moisture mask like O&M Seven-Day Miracle Moisture Masque.Original-Mineral-Seven-Day-Miracle-Moisture-Masque

Why It’s Good for You: It contains a unique blend of nature’s best oils: Macadamia Seed Oil, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Sunflower Oil, and Almond Oil – which are all widely used for repairing damaged hair. The mask is also rich in vitamins essential for building tissue and encouraging hair growth.

CLEANSE

Luma Lisse Cucumber Clarifying Rinse

Exposing our skin to harsh elements can strip it of its natural oils and moisture. When this happens, our skin goes into overdrive and produces more oil than it should. As a result, we get not just oily skin but also – gasp – acne breakouts. To control the skin’s oil production, a gentle facial cleanser is much needed. Luma Lisse Cucumber Clarifying Rinse gently removes impurities and controls overactive sebaceous glands so it only produces enough sebum to keep the skin hydrated.

Why It’s Good for You: Luma Lisse Cucumber Clarifying Rinse is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties derived from natural ingredients, such as cucumber, rosemary, peppermint, and lavender. They help calm irritation as well as effectively reduce the appearance of acne, blemishes, and age spots.

TONE

Oway De-Stress Tonic Potion

Toning is a must if you want to make sure there are no traces of dirt left on the skin after cleansing. Oway De-Stress Tonic Potion is a soothing skin toner that gently sloughs off dead skin cells while nourishing the skin with its unique blend of organic botanicals like Echinacea, Walnut, and Violet Rice.

Why It’s Good for You: The toner is infused with Alpine Skullcap, an ingredient that’s clinically proven to increase endorphins, leading you to feel happier and more relaxed.

MOISTURIZE

Oway Radiance Face Balm Kit

oway-radiance-face-balm-kitApplying moisturizer and boosters after toning and cleansing offers a ton of benefits. Keeping the skin hydrated allows it to function better, not to mention delay aging. Oway Radiance Face Balm Kit contains a moisturizer and a couple of boosters that help the skin produce more collagen, the skin’s underlying support structure.

Why It’s Good for You: The Radiance Face Balm Kit is made from 98.8% natural ingredients, so you get all the wonderful skin benefits nature has to offer.

PERILLA OIL BENEFITS: A Powerful Asian Herb for Healthy Hair

$
0
0

For centuries, Perilla or shiso (Perilla frutescens) has been used in Asian cuisine not just for its minty flavor but also for its many health benefits. Herbalists have used it to treat various ailments, including asthma, food poisoning, and indigestion.

Like other botanicals, this herb contains powerful antibacterial and antioxidant properties – so it is not surprising that beauty companies have begun incorporating Perilla Oil in their formulations.

Benefits of Perilla Oil to the Hair

Fights Hair Aging

oway-hbalanceForget your skin. Your hair can give away your age, too. Experts say that once you hit your 30s, your hair will start to grow thin, fragile, or worse shed. And this is due to lack of Co-enzyme Q10 (COQ10) in our bodies.

COQ10 is a substance that our cells use to generate energy. When we’re low on COQ10, our energy level declines and all our organs start to age fast. Our hair follicles are complex mini-organs that also undergo an aging process.1 And without ample energy, the follicles can’t produce enough keratin, the protein responsible for keeping our hair strong and healthy.

Perilla is one of the potent sources of COQ10.2 Using tonics and shampoos enriched with this herb, like Oway Hbalance Post-Color Neutralizing Shampoo, activates the hair follicles by penetrating deep into the roots. Think of it as a spark plug that awakens the cells to help them perform their normal functions.

Reduces Scalp Irritation

A natural antiseptic, Perilla oil is an excellent treatment for scalp acne and itching. It also has emollient properties that allows it to be quickly absorbed by the skin. When applied, this oil goes right down to the source and eliminates the bacteria causing the inflammation.

If you are highly sensitive to color and other treatments, using serums infused with Perilla oil can provide scalp protection and relief. Oway Hscreen Skin + Scalp Protector can be added to color mixture or applied to the hairline, hands, and cuticle to block color from touching your skin.

Aids Hair Growth

This oil is rich in alpha-linolenic acid, an Omega-3 fatty acid essential for hair growth. Omega-3 fatty acids make it easier for essential nutrients to pass through the cells in our body, including our hair follicles. Without Omega-3 fatty acids, cells won’t receive the nutrition they need and the hair growth cycle stops there.

Also, Perilla’s minty coolness helps soothe the scalp, enabling blood and nutrients to flow to the follicles. This, in turn, regenerates the follicles and promotes hair growth.

Mends Hair Damage

Perilla is best known for its rich antioxidant content. It washes away all the impurities and chemicals drying out and damaging the hair, then fills in the gaps with moisture and nutrients to bring it back to health.

After coloring, we recommend using Oway Hbalance Post-Color pH Mask, to restore the hair’s pH level and seal the cuticle. Doing so will not only lock in moisture, but also preserve the color.

Perilla-Oil-Hair-Benefits

Conditions Strands

oway-hbalance-maskDull and lifeless strands is a sign of unhealthy hair. Similar to Kukui Butter, Perilla has rich Vitamin A content that hydrates the hair without weighing it down. Because of its lightweight composition, the oil quickly penetrates the hair shaft, giving it a beautiful shine.

Have you ever tried using Perilla oil?

The Hairdresser’s Guide to Regaining Confidence

$
0
0

As hair stylists, a large part of our success and happiness depends on our self-confidence. Without it, interacting with people and marketing our services can be tough—especially if the client is being difficult.

So how do we regain our confidence after hitting a low point? Below are some powerful ways to help you get back in the game.

Tips to Get Your Confidence Back

Overcome the Impostor Syndrome.

Many creatives suffer from Impostor Syndrome. Some of us tend to have this little voice in our head, saying we’re going to fail. That every time we create something, we feel like a fraud – and our clients and colleagues are going to find to out.

Our work is our extension of ourselves and selling a part of ourselves to people we don’t know can make us feel vulnerable. Realize that you are the expert and no one else knows your work more than you do. So, each time you doubt your abilities behind the chair, tell yourself it’s the Impostor Syndrome. You’ll find that the situation is not as bad as you think it is.

 Take credit for your work.

Being humble is great, but constantly dismissing your own accomplishments can undermine your self-worth. One marker of Impostor Syndrome is the inability to internalize your achievements. When something good happens, we think it’s mostly luck – without considering the amount of work we’ve put into it.

Just imagine how horrifying it can be for a customer to hear that you’re relying on luck while coloring or treating their hair. Most people are drawn to others who are knowledgeable in their field. When you allow yourself to take credit for your success while accepting responsibility for your mistakes, you allow other people to see you as a successful, responsible artist: an instant confidence booster.

Turn negative situations into positive ones.

So you got the formula right, but instead of pink – you turned a client’s hair into purple. She goes berserk, and your confidence sinks to nothing. And it’s okay. Mistakes happen, and you shouldn’t take it personally.

Dealing with rejection and criticism can be devastating, but instead of giving up, look at the situation as a learning opportunity. Ask yourself what you might have done wrong (wrong color ratio or developer, maybe?) and how you can fix it, so it doesn’t happen with other clients.

Remember that every successful person has failed at some point in their lives. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not making progress.

Focus on progress, not perfection.

When you strive for perfection, you’re putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. Far too many artists hold back from sharing their work or from experimenting for fear of being vulnerable – without realizing that their vulnerability is what makes them unique.

Some of the hair color formulas we love today were created by accident. And it’s because of artists who aren’t afraid to shake up the norm and put themselves out there.

hairdresser-guide-to-regaining-confidence

Invest in you.

As hair stylists, our education doesn’t stop when we finish cosmetology school. To truly succeed in our field, we constantly need to strive for self-improvement. Sign up for certification classes to gain a new skill. Read up on the latest salon marketing tips to attract new clients.  Watch free online trainings to brush up on a specific skill set or gain more knowledge.

Investing in your education allows you to understand your field better and hone your communication skills. The more you know how to communicate your art to you clients, the more confident you become.

Getting your confidence back is not easy. But as long as you have a positive mindset and willingness to fail, you can’t be defeated. Besides, you’re helping other people feel good about themselves. That in itself is the best reward one can ask for. Only a few people are given the rare opportunity to transform other’s lives.

So relax, have fun, and keep learning.

DATE OIL BENEFITS: The Hair-Saving Ingredient That’s Missing from Your Routine

$
0
0

Highly esteemed by ancient civilizations thousands of years of ago, Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as Date Palm Tree, is cultivated not just for its sweet fruit, but also for its practical uses. The Date fruits are a staple food in the Middle East. The leaves are used to weave ropes and baskets, while the trunk is used for building homes. Because of these incredible uses, the locals refer to it as the Tree of Life.

But its uses don’t end there. The seeds are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and polyunsaturated fatty acids that are beneficial to our hair, skin, and overall health. This prompted many beauty brands, particularly hair care, to incorporate date seed oil in their formulations in place of some vegetable oils.

Benefits of Date Oil to the Hair

Creates a Healthy Scalp Environment

oway-hcolorFor healthy hair to thrive, it needs to have the ideal environment. And we don’t have to look far. The scalp is where the hair gets its nutrition, so it should always be in top condition to support proper hair growth.

Date oil contains generous amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids, which are polyunsaturated fats that provide nourishment to the scalp. Apart from that, date oil is also rich in lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid that contains antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. This helps create an optimal environment for hair growth by removing dandruff and acne.1

Thickens Hair

Thinning hair is not as scary as it seems. In fact, it’s a normal part of aging. But why does it happen?

Hair loss is caused by many factors. But here’s the basic idea: When our cells do not generate enough energy, all our organs – including our hair follicles – will start to age. As a result, hair growth will slow down and shedding will soon begin. When this happens, you will need vitamin B2 and amino acids to prevent it from getting worse.

Date oil has high amino acid and riboflavin (vitamin B2) content that can effectively curb hair loss. Amino acid is essential in producing keratin, the protein responsible for strengthening the follicles and increasing hair elasticity. Riboflavin, on the other hand, plays a major role in energy production and restoring cellular function and development.

Prevents Premature Greying

Dates are high in many vitamins that help protect against pigment loss. Two of which are Copper and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), which help stimulate pigment production.

Our hair color is determined by the amount of melanin in the strands. As we age, our body produces lesser melanin, turning our hair grey. While we cannot reverse aging, we can encourage our body to produce enough melanin by eating food and using products that are naturally rich in Copper and pantothenic acid, such as Oway Hcolor.

Fights Free Radicals

Dates are rich in bioactive non-nutrients called phytochemicals, that function as antioxidants.2 In fact, dates have been reported to be the second highest antioxidant fruit consumed in China.3

Date oil contains many classes of bioactive components, and one of them is carotenoids. It is a well-known antioxidant that helps strengthen the hair by protecting it from free radicals.

Moisturizes Hair

date-oil-hair-benefits

momentum-mens-shampooApart from preventing dandruff and scalp acne, date oil is also widely used for its moisturizing benefits. The Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids contained in the oil helps control water loss so the hair’s moisture is kept intact and the cuticles sealed.

To revive dry, brittle hair, we recommend using hair care products made with date oil, like Momentum Rejuvenate Cleansing Shampoo and Conditioner for men.

Isn’t it incredible what a little Date Oil can do for our hair?

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL BENEFITS: The Aromatherapy Oil Your Hair and Body Needs

For thousands of years, Lavender (or Lavandula) has been used as a cure for various ailments since Ancient Greece and Rome. In the 17th century, people in Great Britain believed that tying Lavender flowers to their waists would protect them against the Bubonic Plague.

But most of us know Lavender as a classic essential oil we love for its relaxing, floral scent. But do not be fooled – apart from this flower’s alluring color and sweet aroma, Lavender offers a multitude of hair and wellness benefits.

How Lavender Essential Oil Benefits the Hair

Combats Hair Loss

oway-rebuilding-serumHair loss is caused by many factors. It can be genetic, a consequence of a disease, or it can be triggered by an unhealthy scalp environment. For the hair to thrive and complete its growth cycle, it needs to be in a healthy environment. Otherwise, it will wither and fall out.

Lavender essential oil is filled with antiseptic and antibacterial properties that protect the scalp against dirt and bacteria. It also helps improve blood circulation in the scalp, which revitalizes the hair follicles.

A study in Scotland found that combining lavender with other oils, like Rosemary and Jojoba, significantly increases its potential for preventing hair loss and encouraging hair growth. Forty-four percent of alopecia patients who participated in the study reported an increase in hair growth after massaging lavender into the scalp.1

Eliminates Dandruff

To totally get rid of dandruff, we need to know the root cause. Dandruff happens when our scalp is exposed to multiple aggressive elements that alter its physiological flora. Because of this, our scalp becomes irritated, and fights off the irritation by producing extra skin cells which eventually die and fall off as dandruff.

Lavender essential oil is high in antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals, so the scalp’s pH stays within the normal range. Using hair treatments containing this plant, like Oway Rebuilding Serum, will help calm the irritation and alleviate itching in no time.

Treats Scalp Acne

Yes, even our scalp can have zits. And like facial acne, it can be annoying and painful, especially when brushing our hair. It’s also more difficult to treat because they’re hidden.

Scalp acne occurs when dead skin cells and oil clog the hair follicles – which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria that turns into acne. If not treated immediately, it develops into a vicious cycle of infection and irritation that can result to hair loss.

Due to its antiseptic properties, Lavender essential oil inhibits the bacteria causing the infection.Adding a small amount of lavender essential oil to your regular shampoo or hair serum can provide relief and soothing benefits to the affected area.

Comforts Sensitive Skin

Having sensitive skin can be a real challenge. It prevents you from enjoying the things you love and living your life to the fullest for fear of triggering a flare-up. Thank goodness nature has a solution for that.

Lavender-Oil-Benefits

Clinical studies have shown that Lavender is one of the most active essential oils against skin allergies, blemishes, and photodamage from UV exposure. It’s even proven to relieve inflammation, wounds, ulcers, and fungal infections due to the oil’s antioxidant properties.

Sensitive-skinned individuals who head to the salon for a fresh color or highlight often times experience undesirable scalp irritation – lavender essential oil can remedy this.

In Oway Hscreen, Lavender is one of many precious oils that protect the scalp during a color service. Simply add it to your hair color mix or apply directly to reduce sensitivity. For on-scalp lightening services, the lavender essential oil mixed with plant butters in Oway Hbleach can be a saving grace for the scalp!

How Lavender Essential Oil Benefits the Body

Induces Sleep

Organic-Essential-Oil-TreatmentWe’ve heard this too many times before: To get a good night’s sleep, put Lavender on your pillow. And it’s true. Just a whiff of this flower and it will lull you to dreamland.

Lavender contains linalyl acetate and linalool, which are chemicals that induce calmness and sleep when inhaled. Once they enter the bloodstream, they inhibit neurotransmitters, which put the body in a relaxed state. Because of this, many recommend Lavender essential oil as alternative treatment for insomnia, especially for the elderly.3

Calms Nerves

oway-flowerfallThere’s a reason spas like using Lavender essential oil. Its scent is an excellent tonic for the nerves,4 making us feel relaxed.

Apart from insomnia, several studies have also shown that this wonder oil helps treat anxiety disorder, depression, nervous tension, and stress by keeping the body calm while increasing the brain activity. 5 In fact, one study showed that inhaling lavender oil before taking a test can help decrease anxiety but at the same time improve cognitive function.6

There are many Lavender essential oils available on the market that you can diffuse for your salon, or you can also try Oway’s Anti-Ageing Flowerfall Treatment. Whatever you choose, you and your clients are sure to benefit from the healing properties of Lavender.

Educator Spotlight: Bailey Simon Sagona

This month, our spotlight is on Simply Organic Beauty Educator Bailey Simon Sagona. Bailey owns what is probably the most charming salon space ever in Geismar, LA – Periwinkle Beauty Studio, where she treats her clients to a multi-sensorial experience behind the chair.

She believes in incorporating the five senses in her salon to create a truly holistic environment, so we interviewed her to learn about what inspired her to become part of the Organic Way movement.

Check out her interview below!

Outside of the salon, what are your main goals in life?

One of my main goals is to be the best example for my son of what it means to be mindful and humble. I hope to teach him to understand what it means for him to love himself and others and how to connect with the world around him.

I know the question asks for goals outside of salon, but line between personal and work life is so blurred for me. I am so passionate about what I do that it is intertwined in all aspects of my life.

Another goal of mine is to help people see and embrace their inner and outer beauty. Every person that sits in my chair is not just a guest, but a friend. It is my honor to be able to change their life for the better as much as they change mine. It is more than just a haircut, color, or treatment – it’s a connection.

Also, a goal of mine is spreading awareness about hair loss, and helping people not to feel embarrassed or hopeless. I want to help give people their dignity back. There are so many aspects to hair loss and people should know that there are options. Lifestyle changes, diet, illnesses, medication, vitamin deficiencies, and so much more can make a major impact on hair. I want to show people that their body is trying tell them something is not right, help them get their hair back, and change their life and health forever.

What is something on your bucket list?

This is so hard! There are so many fabulous things on my list! Definitely traveling all over Europe, like old historical landmarks, landscapes; immerse myself in the cultures – just go to the places where there are no tourists just locals. I want to explore and see what else is out there, meet new people, and have unforgettable experiences. Of course, going to Bologna, Italy to pay a visit to the Oway farm is a must!

What brought you to working with a more organic and holistic line, like Oway?

My beautiful little boy. The moment I saw him I knew he only deserved the best out of life, including the best health. In the months following his birth I discovered the harmful side of  ‘health and beauty’ products. I’ve been in the industry for years and have had so many awful illnesses, autoimmune diseases, and allergies. Lots of research lead me to the conclusion that my prior lifestyle, diet, and profession were causes to my and my son’s health issues. I got to work on finding the best alternatives in my home and in my career. That’s when I ‘googled it’ and there was my answer, The Organic Way, offered by Simply Organic Beauty. I was terrified! How could these products even work? Well here I am over a year later after finding Oway, fully committed and loyal. Making the jump was the best thing I ever did, and my life is forever changed for the better.

How would your family and friends describe you?

Well I asked them, and here is what they said: My Mom: A beautiful positive young woman who encourages others to see the beauty in themselves. My younger sister: determined and healthy. My best friend: Caring and loyal.

oway-glossy-nectarWhat is your favorite hair color formula?

Oh, so many! I love to formulate and make magic with color! Fashion color-wise I am slightly obsessed with teals so Oway Hcolor equal parts 10.1 and 0.9 over hair pre-lightened with Hbleach. As for a more conservative color: Oway Hcolor 8.0, 7.31, 6.0, and 6.3 with Oway Hbleach hand-painted throughout.

Who has inspired you in the industry?

When I was 14, I began to assist my cousin who is an amazing hair stylist and salon owner. I saw the joy that she gave people not just with hair services, but with the connections she made with her guests. I fell in love with all things hair and beauty and never turned back. I am so grateful for the knowledge and experiences that she gave me!

What product would you most desire if you were on a deserted island?

Oway Glossy Nectar for sure! I could just bathe in it. Like I don’t think the words ‘too much Glossy Nectar’ should ever be spoken! Plus it could soothe a sunburn, protect me from getting wrinkles, and keep my hair in check while I await my rescuer!

Oway-EducatorWhat practices do you have as a holistic stylist?

Webster defines holistic as “characterized by the treatment of the whole person”, and that is what I do with every guest and with my salon practices. For my guests their ‘whole’ self is what sits in my chair, so mind, body, and soul are present. I had never had a guest leave without feeling like each of us had touched each other’s lives/made a connection. For my salon as a ‘whole’, I incorporate sensory experiences to help my guest relax and be at peace while engaging all 5 senses. I use a diffuser for smell, spring water to quench their thirst, pleasant décor, and soft colors throughout for ease on their eyes. Adele is usually singing in the background soothing ears, and a relaxing shampoo bowl experience and Remedy Hand Balm for touch.

Do you have any ideas for people that want to market their salon using their Oway line?

Try all of the products more than once, learn all about them, and believe in them. When you truly believe in what you are using and doing, that passion shows through and there will be no need to prove your belief in the Oway products and way of life. You will find yourself so immersed in the brand and what it stands for that promoting yourself or your salon will come naturally.

I also love to sample. I use amber glass bottles and jars to introduce my guests who are interested, but maybe unsure if they want to change. They see how amazing it is and the benefit that it is not harmful to their health, and they make the switch!

5 Simple Ways to Upcycle Your Oway Salon Products

$

Every year, millions of tons of plastic are sent to our landfills, with only a small percentage being recycled. Many of them leak into our oceans, causing pollution and destroying our marine life.

In 2016, a study predicted that in 2050, plastics will outweigh the fish in our ocean if we continue producing and disposing plastic.1 This and other health concerns such as harmful chemicals from plastic packaging leaching into our food and care products pushed Oway to adopt amber glass as its primary source of packaging.

Unlike plastic, amber glass is 100% recyclable and can be repurposed in several ways. Here are crafty ideas on how you can upcycle Oway’s amber glass bottles and jars:

oway-reed-diffusersReed Diffuser

Give your salon a relaxing ambiance by creating your own reed diffusers. Oway retail and backbar bottles make perfect diffusers due to their narrow opening. The smaller the neck of the bottle, the slower the essential oil evaporates.

HOW? Combine Oway essential oil with a base oil (almond or safflower oil are great options) or water and vodka mixture. Then pour it in a clean amber glass bottle and place the reeds into the solution. Let them soak for a few minutes, then take them out and place the other ends into the receptacle. Make sure to swap the ends every week to keep the aroma wafting.

You can also try pasting custom labels or inspiring quotes to add personality to your reed diffusers.

Candle Holder

oway-candles

If you want to give your salon a warm and cozy atmosphere, adding candles might just do the trick. They instantly set the mood and soothe the senses, allowing your clients to just sit back and relax. Since Oway packaging is made of amber glass, it makes an excellent candle holder.

HOW? Melt wax in a pan and mix with a few drops of essential oil once melted to create a pleasing aroma. Put the wick in your empty Oway Shabby Mud container, then pour the wax, while securing the wick in place. Let it cool for a few hours and you’re good to go. Looking for a larger size candle? Try one of Oway’s Backbar Masks (500ml)!

oway-amber-glassStorage

Don’t you just hate it when you keep losing your hair clips and bobbie pins? By repurposing your Oway Boho Pomade and Oway Shaping Putty containers into little storage pots, you’re never going to lose them again.

HOW? Simply clean the pots and remove the label (if you prefer). You can add your own custom labels like your salon name, quotes, or drawings for some added fun.

Plant Holder

As hairstylists, we are exposed to various chemicals that can harm our health. Having plants in our salon not only make beautiful decorations, they also help eliminate air pollutants. Oway amber glass jars are big enough to fit small succulents like plush plants and aloe vera, which helps remove formaldehyde and benzene from the air.

HOW? Here’s a quick tutorial on how to make a plant holder out of your Oway Rebuilding Serum jar.

oway-soap-dispenserSoap Dispenser

The beauty of glass packaging is it’s infinitely recyclable. You can use it for refills or for a totally different purpose. Oway shampoos and conditioners have pumps that allow you to dispense liquid products with ease. This makes it an excellent container for hand soap, dishwashing detergent, and even lotion.

HOW? Wash bottles by soaking them in a saline solution overnight. This will help the label come off easily. Then, run them through the dishwasher the next day, but make sure to remove the pumps before doing so. Once they’re dry, you can pour soap into the container and add cute decals to label the bottles.

Why recycle when you can upcycle? By doing so, you are not only putting your creativity to good use, but you are also doing the planet and the future generations a huge favor.
